I don’t usually do stand-alone movie reviews. However, I literally just now (11:18 PM on Friday, October 5th) got home from the cinema with Kirsti, after watching A Star Is Born; I decided about halfway through the film to do a stand-alone movie review about it. So, without further ado, let’s get to the review…
Seasoned musician Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) discovers – and falls in love with – struggling artist Ally (Lady Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer – until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons.
A Star Is Born – Bradley Cooper’s production and directorial debut… and what a debut it is! There are so many things that I loved about this film!
As Jackson and Ally meet, you can see – straight off the bat – the connection that they have. This is not only portrayed via the characters being played, but also – the chemistry between Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga is second to none. I’m a sucker for good chemistry, and this is one of the best duos that I’ve seen in a while.
Not only that, but… Where has Bradley been hiding that singing voice of his?! Because he’s outstanding! I could listen to him, all day. Their voices are beautiful, together and I’ve no doubt that the soundtrack for A Star Is Born will become one of my most played playlists on Spotify, very soon.
A Star Is Born is not your usual someone-becomes-famous cliché movie… there is so much more going on than that. Not only is Bradley and Gaga’s chemistry fantastic, but there are real issues in play within this film – love, depression, alcoholism, suicide, self-doubt, lack of self-confidence, and the list goes on. Personally, I think that Bradley (as a director and actor) and Gaga have dealt with all of these matters in a respectful and classy manner that brings awareness to the fact that someone’s life might look perfect on the outside, but that doesn’t mean that it is so on the inside.
One of the main things for me in A Star Is Born is the fact that Gaga has been stripped down, bearing all… and, she’s breath-taking! I literally couldn’t stop looking at her on screen! I think that she really helped to add to Ally’s character, but Gaga’s casting in this movie was a brilliant choice, overall. She’s always been known for her amazing voice, but this film proves that she also has raw acting talent. I have never been Gaga’s biggest fan, but after seeing her in A Star Is Born, I have a completely different opinion of her, now.
I would highly recommend this film! I smiled, I laughed, I felt angry and let down, I cried… but all in all, it’s a very beautiful and powerful film. I’d go as far as saying that it is one of the best movies that I’ve seen from 2018… if not the best movie! I give it 5/5 stars.
